Nā te pō, ko te ao, ko te ao mārama
From the darkest depths of the night we become enlightened.
We are proud to be regarded as leaders in astro-tourism experiences. We connect manuhiri (visitors) to the night sky via scientific and cultural experiences.
Located in Takapō (Tekapo) in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, we offer a range of stargazing and observatory experiences, including at the world-renowned University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory.
In July 2019 we opened a new centre on the Takapō lakefront, featuring a world-first multimedia astronomy experience combining tātai aroraki (Māori astronomy) and science to complement our evening, outdoor experiences. This centre is also home to Dark Sky Diner, offering spectacular views and delicious food and beverages both day and night.
Dark Sky Project is owned by founders Hide Ozawa and Graeme Murray and Ngāi Tahu Tourism.
